Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park + Trinidad California Vacation
Last week, my husband and I decided to make a vacation around a friend’s wedding in Trinidad California. Many years ago, we flew into San Fran then drove the coastal highway to Portland, so we were familiar with the Northern Cali Coast, but hadn’t spent more than a few nights there. We started with a camping trip to Del Norte Coast Redwood State Park then moved to Trinidad for our California vacation.
Camping in the Redwood Forest was on our bucket list. We asked a bunch of friends what their favorite place to camp in the Redwoods were, and everyone told us we couldn’t go wrong. After some research, we settled on Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park. We spent two nights at Mill Creek Campground, campsite 22. I would highly recommend our campsite- it was so private! Our campsite was up several sets of stairs and had a patio rooftop feel. I would not recommend this campsite with two tents – we were a little cramped, but it would have been perfect for one tent.
After we set up our tents, we made our way to one of the trails before dinner. Mill Creek has a few trails that stem from one of the camping areas, so we took a nice long walk into the Redwood Forest. We were with two of our friends who had never seen these types of trees. They had a fun time geeking out at their size.
The next morning we woke up and went on the Coastal Trail that starts near Crescent City. This has to be one of my favorite hikes to date because of the views. It took us to a beach right away where we spent some time exploring the rocks and dipping our toes in the ocean. The water was freezing, but warm enough for us to eventually submerge.
The next morning, we packed up and headed to Trinidad for our friend’s wedding. It was my first time in Trinidad, and the city is beautiful. It’s a small coastal town with tons of beautiful beaches and cliffs for viewing.
Our final day in Trinidad, we headed to Fern Canyon for one last hike. Unfortunately, we couldn’t make it all the way in due to a closure, but we did see a lot of Elk hanging out on the side of the road.
Northern Cali is beyond beautiful! I can’t wait to return and spend more time on the coast. This has to be one of my favorite spots in the country.
We love traveling- here’s another recent vacation of ours if you want more nature views or vacation planning inspiration!
