My favorite food is the first tomato from my garden every year. It’s always a cherry, so sweet and so delicious, and that moment I get to pluck it from the vine means it has been a great summer. After a weekend away, it felt great to get my hands dirty and play in the garden- there was a lot of weeding to be done. My talented husband built this garden 5 years ago for me. I remember seeing his design on paper, it was hard for me to imagine. Several weeks later, he brought it to life, and I can’t thank him enough.
This year, we have ten tomato plants, a zucchini, bush beans, snow peas, peppers, cucumbers, lettuce, kale, herbs, and chives. The chives actually came from Papa’s garden, and the last 4 years they have come back happier then ever. I was taught to garden by Papa long ago. His garden was always perfect- everything spaced with the utmost care and not a weed in site. Although I am not as meticulous, my garden provides enough veggies to last my husband and I several months. Last year, we also added a bug repelling garden next to our patio, so we can sit down in peace. It includes several kinds of mint, Lemon Balm, Marigolds, Lavender, and Rosemary.
My husband and are also working to plant the flower beds around our house. He has worked several job sites this year that have been getting rid of some of their plants, so we have adopted Rhododendron bush, rose bushes, Hastas, ferns, and lilies.
There’s something so special about eating the fruits of your labor. Gardening is a lot of work, and sometimes as I pull weeds I think about how pointless it is, but that first tomato, my favorite food ever, is worth it. I would love to hear about your garden! What do you like to plant? Do you have any tips?
