Bayfield, Wisconsin Yurt
Last year, my husband and I took a trip to the North Shore during peak fall colors. It was like living in a National Geographic magazine, and we now have a tradition of taking a weekend together during this time of year to embrace the fall. We knew the weather wasn’t going to be great this past weekend, but we didn’t care. We loaded up our car and went to Bayfield, Wisconsin to sleep in a yurt and spend some quality time together.
The drive to Bayfield, Wisconsin alone was picture worthy. Our GPS took us through Duluth then hugged the Superior Shoreline. Our yurt was located on top of a hill, and we drove through a forest of golden and red leaves. We parked our car at a sign that said yurt parking, and were surpassed to find out we would have to hike in 5 miles.
I thought we could drive right up to the yurt, but apparently, I can’t read a map, and we had packed like we were car camping. After a quick laugh, we bucked up a took our first load up the long, uphill trail. The walk up to the yurt was magical. The colors were out of a fairytale, so it kept our minds away from how heavy our packs were. We unloaded at the top and took another trip with our food and other supplies up just to catch the sunset.
The next morning, we woke up to a breath taking view. You can see Lake Superior from the yurt, as well as the town of Bayfield. After breakfast, we walked back to our car to go for a hike.
It was rainy and cold, but once we started moving, we felt warm. We headed to the Houghton Falls Nature Preserve and did a trail through the woods that lead down to the shore.
We made our way back to Bayfield where we boarded a ferry and went to Madeline Island. The wind/rain/snow put most visitors inside, but we took another hike through the downtown then went in for a drink or two at a bar.
By the time we made it back to the yurt, the clouds had rolled in. Snowflakes came down softly, and all throughout the night.
We woke to a much different view the next day. Some of the snow has accumulated and decorated the the forest. Luckily, the yurt was very warm. We passed the time each evening with board games, music, and drinks next to a cozy indoor fire.
I would highly recommend checking out Bayfield, Wisconsin and this yurt! We already want to plan another trip back!
This was my second time sleeping in a yurt. Here’s my other yurt adventure from Portland, Oregon.
