Why I Teach Yoga

Why I teach yoga

In 2010, I signed up for teacher training through my yoga studio. I signed up because I thought I was soooo good at the postures, I should become a teacher. Welp… was I ever wrong.

Over the eight weeks I studied to be a yoga teacher, my mindset shifted, and teaching yoga changed my life.  I know that may sound corny or really basic, but it’s true.  It has made me a kinder, stronger, and better human. Here are some of the WHY’s behind why I teach yoga.

Before studied yoga, I was a destructive person.  I was young, naive, impatient, and not mindful at all. Through studying yoga philosophy, I was able to practice what yoga calls Svadhyaya or self study.  In doing so, I became more aware of the things I wanted to shift and change about myself.   I am now more mindful of others, aware of my own body/mind, and more welcoming to change. Teaching others the benefits of observing and studying oneself is so valuable. Since it’s been huge in my life, I want to share my story and empower others to do the same.

I also love teaching because it allows me to pass the wisdom of yoga onto others. I will never be a guru- I think that word can be a bit ridiculous. As a teacher, am just passing on the knowledge that others have discovered. I have the opportunity to teach others not only postures, but why we do them and what their true meaning is.

If you have ever been to my class, I’m huge into the philosophy. Most postures have a ton of meaning behind them. There’s physical, energetic, and mental benefits. My duty as a teacher is to pass those on so my students understand why we do the things we do.

My personal goal in every class is for everyone to learn something. I love learning, which is another reason I teach. Through my classes, I get to study new ideas and concepts. I teach because it inspires me to keep learning and growing.

I also teach because it keeps me surrounded by a yoga community. The students and fellow teachers inspire me to stay on my mat, be more grounded, and take care of myself.

Teaching yoga has been my side hustle for the past nine years, and I plan to keep doing it as long as I am able to. It’s made me a better person. I teach a free class every month for creatives and entrepreneurs. If you are interested in attending, the next one is 4/23. Send me an email at angeladivinephotography@gmail.com and I’ll get you the details.
