May Day Parade 2017 – Minneapolis, Minnesota
We have lived in the East Phillips neighborhood for 7 years, and it has become tradition in our home to celebrate May Day by attending the parade and ceremony. The parade goes down Blooomington ave, which is a block away, and it is one of my favorite days of the year since living here because it celebrates the many artists in our community and the cultural issues our neighborhood faces each year.
From Native American dancing to puppets 10 feet tall, this parade has a little something for everyone. We usually start the day with a few friends, mimosas, and stake out a spot to watch the parade. Once it goes by, we refuel at home and walk down to Powderhorn Park for the ceremony and festivities. Each year, we try and get a few people that have never witnessed this day to join us because it is truly a day to be proud of Minneapolis.
I’m so sad that next year, we will not be living in this home for Mayday. Not only are we close enough to feel the excitement and buzz, but we won’t be able to take bathroom breaks!
If you have never been, do yourself a favor and mark your calendar for next year, hope to see you there!
