My absolute favorite restaurant as a kid was Chet’s. Every time we went to our family cabin in Alexandria, Minnesota, we would have dinner here. They are famous for their friend chicken. It has the most perfect texture- crunchy outside, steamy juicy inside, just unbelievable. I was recently up in Alexandria with my family, and we couldn’t help ourselves, we had to go to Chet’s, in fact- I think it’s one of the reasons we all made the trip.
This dinner was especially magical for me because my husband joined us, a total newbie to all things Chet’s. The place looked exactly the same. My parents pointed out a few things, but to me, everything was as it was. It even smelled the same. As soon as we pulled up, my brother and I got out and walked toward the back yard. When we were kids, several bunnies hung out back there and we would chase them. The place, as usual, was packed. Luckily, we had a reservation and headed to a familiar table. I didn’t order the chicken- I have not had chicken in years- but that was never my favorite part. This place has the best salad bar of all time! I loaded my plate with all my favorites- coleslaw, potatoe salad, and the ultimate chocolate mousse. Any salad bar with homemade chocolate mouse wins. It was so delicious, so incredible to be back there with my family, and was totally worth traveling here for. If you are ever in this area, check out this hidden gem.
