Cake Walk Sucess

One thing I have been wanting to more of is giving back.  With how busy my life is, I barely have time to do anything, so when it comes to donating, I often give money or drop off a bag of old clothes at the good will.  Although this is honorable, there’s something about putting being present and putting in hours that makes giving back even more special.

This past weekend, three other talented women and myself hosted an event to warm up and feed those less fortunate in Minnesota.  The event was called Spread the Love and Whiskey Junction was so generous to let us have the event at their wonderful venue.  A seven dollar cover bought guests a plate of food, a ticket to the cake walk, and live music, but behind the scenes that money raised over $1000 for Second Harvest Heartland- which will be matched dollar by dollar when we donate it!  People were so generous as well to bring blankets, jackets and other warm clothing for the Simpson House.  We had bags and bags and bags at the end of the night, they are getting one heck of a donation.  We also asked for canned goods, and again, have bags and bags to donate to a food shelf.  We are so grateful for all the people who were able to drive through the snow and contribute to this amazing cause!

My contribution to the event was running the cake walk.  If you have never done a cake walk, it is highly recommended.  The game is much like musical chairs and once you sit down, if your number gets called, you get to pick out a cake or dessert from the prize table.  Getting the cakes was a challenge at first, but thankfully, some great people came through the contribute.  We had 20 prizes and received amazing donations from Isles Buns, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Lucia’s, Mojo Monkey Donuts, Bogart’s Donuts, Sssdude-nutz, Cocoa and Fig, and Minnecakes.  We also had some amazing friends and family bake prizes and for that, I am so grateful.   I spent most of my day Friday and Saturday picking up the donations before the event, and Saturday evening, my husband and I loaded everything up into his work van to take the event.  I also had the privilege of being the cake walk MC throughout the night to give away all these prizes.  What an experience!

Being apart of this event was a lot of work, but it all came together for a good cause!  Thursday we are sorting through everything to make sure it gets a proper home and will be brining the donations to these charities by the end of the week.  Giving back makes you feel so good, and not just because you are doing something great for others, but when you see a group of friends come together and really contribute to something bigger then themselves, that is a great feeling.

I encourage everything to give a little something before 2016 ends.  It can be small- pass out gloves to those on the corner asking for money, load up your car with granola bars and do the same, or even just go online and make a donation.  Giving back is the best, and if we all do a little, it makes the world a real nice place!
