Allie and Andrew – 1/14/17 – Banquets of Minnesota Wedding

Allie and Andrew met through a mutual friend.  Both of them were in school in Winona, and while in Minneapolis crossed paths.  Their first meeting sparked interest, and while Allie worked as a teacher, Andrew and her took turns visiting each other.  When together, they spend their time hiking, exploring, and camping through state parks.

When I arrived at the Banquets of Minnesota for Allie and Andrew’s wedding, she was putting on her mother’s dress.  I could see in her mother’s eyes that she was honored to have her daughter wear it, despite having to redo the lacing.  It was forty degrees warmer than the day before (-20) so going outside was the option!  Allie grabbed a pair of boots and a fur coat and we headed off to the Springbrook Nature Center for some photos.

Fresh white snow covered the trails, and the place was silent, not even a whisper of the wind.  We walked the trails, enjoying the warmer temperatures, and after some time, the sunlight made it feel warm enough to take off our jackets.  Our time outside ended with throwing snow and laughter before warming up in the car.

Back at the Banquets of Minnesota, their families had started to gathers.  Andrew’s Kenyan family had offered the gift of their tea for their guests.  Allie’s brother works for the DNR and helped make their ring box, flowers and centerpieces.

Everyone sat together for the ceremony and continued to celebrate during their reception.  After a few toasts, Andrew’s mother passed the mic to his aunties who were just adorable.  First, they wrapped Allie and the women in her family with special Kenyan flags.  Traditionally, to celebrate in Kenya, brides are also covered with oil, but his aunties decided to put a little twist on this and replaced oil with dollar bills.  Everyone came up to place money on Allie, it was overwhelmingly wonderful!

Bringing family traditions into a wedding day makes it so much more memorable for everyone, and Allie and Andrew did just that!  It was a day that no one will ever forget, and thank you so much to Allie and Andrew for having me!  I left smiling from ear to ear, and I hope we run into each other on a state park trail!
